I will start by admitting that my technology capabilities are not up to par with where they probably should be, so, heading into this course, I was a bit overwhelmed by all the information that was being given to me. Trying to set up my own web portfolio was more formidable than it probably should have been. But, in the end, after much trial and error, I managed to create my very own web portfolio! Although constructing this portfolio was a big learning curve for me, I actually learned a lot from the experience and now feel much more confident going forward than I did during my first Ed Tech class.

BC FIPPA Cloud Guidelines

I learned a lot from reading the FIPPA cloud guidelines. Here is a list of the parts that I found the most interesting and some things that I didn’t know.

  • FIPPA stands for BC’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

  • A “public body” includes: schools, hospitals, municipalities, and more.

  • A public body must keep personal information stored in, and accessed from, inside Canada only.

  • I was aware that many cloud programs stored information outside of Canada but I was unaware that schools were not allowed to store personal information outside of Canada unless written consent is given.

Most Likely to Succeed Movie

I found the movie Most Likely To Succeed very interesting and informative. Here is the information that I learned from the movie that I think is important and meaningful for me, as a teacher.

  • Although the industrial revolution drastically changed our economy and the way we live, education stayed stagnant and, essentially, hasn’t changed much since prior to this time.

  • In this technology-filled world, we need to look at what skills are needed to help students succeed.

  • Students are going to be more interested and retain more if they are intrigued by a subject and/or intrigued by the way the subject is being taught or presented.

  • Society needs to create citizens capable of innovative thinking.

  • School is turning into test preparation and not actually preparing students for the real world.

  • Critical thinking, advanced communication skills, and creativity are becoming more important than the rudimentary skills that are being taught in our school system today because the jobs that require these rudimentary skills will soon be overtaken by technology.

  • The world is changing and our education system needs to adapt to keep up. We might not know exactly how to accomplish that yet but it is clear that we need to start testing out new ideas in the field of education.
